About the Role

We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the mobile engineering team building Crossplay experiences across iOS and Android. In this role, you'll help set the technical direction for our mobile apps, grow a high-performing team, and partner closely with product, design, editorial, data, and platform teams to deliver intuitive, reliable experiences for our audience.

You'll balance people leadership with strong technical judgment, and create clarity in a complex, cross-functional environment. You will establish healthy engineering practices, and help build capabilities that allow our teams to move quickly while maintaining quality, accessibility, performance, privacy, and reliability.

NYT Games is a collaborative team that values inclusion, diversity and personal growth. We combine exceptional product development with a world-class suite of puzzles including beloved titles such as the NYT Crossword, Spelling Bee, Connections, Crossplay and Wordle. Come help us on our journey to grow a world-class mobile platform, as we continue delivering delightful experiences to millions daily.

You will report to the Director of Engineering, Games Platform.

Responsibilities:

• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of iOS and Android engineers using core mobile technologies such as Swift and Kotlin while cultivating an inclusive culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

• Set team direction, establish goals, and create an execution plan aligned with Crossplay's product and priorities.

• Partner with product and design leaders to shape roadmaps, define milestones, and make thoughtful tradeoffs among scope, quality, speed, and technical investment.

• Guide mobile architecture and technical strategy across iOS and Android, promoting consistency where it helps while respecting platform-specific strengths.

• Improve the full development lifecycle, including planning, technical design, implementation, testing, release management, observability, and incident response by scaling best practices and integrating AI-assisted tools to accelerate delivery.

• Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:

• 1+ years of strategic leadership experience managing native mobile engineering teams including hiring, coaching, performance management, and organizational planning

• Deep technical fluency in building complex, high-performance mobile apps, and strong understanding of mobile engineering fundamentals, including app architecture, release processes, testing, observability, and performance optimization

• A track record of shipping and operating high-quality consumer mobile applications at meaningful scale and guiding roadmaps, ideally of both iOS and Android

• Experience leading cross-functional product development from strategy through delivery and iteration with an emphasis on collaboration

• Experience prioritizing customer value, engineering health, and long-term maintainability

• Proven ability to navigate technical ambiguity and drive clarity across long-term, cross-functional initiatives

• Advocate and facilitate continuous improvement and learning

• Knowledgeable and passionate about AI coding tools especially when it comes to mobile development

Preferred Qualifications:

• Track record of leveraging AI tooling to drive efficiency in complex mobile development workflows

• Experience partnering with web and backend engineers to build end-to-end products

• Experience building reusable platform capabilities that amplify the effectiveness of multiple mobile native teams
