Position Summary:
CVS Health's Developer Experience (DevEx) organization is seeking a Distinguished Engineer to provide technical leadership across platform engineering, developer tooling, and AI-enabled software development. This individual will define technical strategy and architecture for critical DevEx platforms while partnering closely with the Acceleration organization, including API Platform, Experience Platform, Feature Flagging, and Mobile teams, to ensure a cohesive and interoperable engineering ecosystem.
The Distinguished Engineer will drive innovation in AI-assisted software development, influence enterprise-wide architectural decisions, and serve as a key contributor to CVS Health's open source strategy. This role requires a highly credible, hands-on technical leader who can drive alignment, influence without direct authority, and elevate engineering excellence across the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
• Own technical architecture, standards, and technical direction for a core domain within DevEx's platform engineering portfolio, serving as the highest-level technical escalation point.
• Partner with Acceleration leadership and engineering teams to align internal developer platform investments, including CAP (CVS Health's Kubernetes-based application platform), CI/CD, and software supply chain security capabilities.
• Influence architecture decisions across Acceleration platforms, particularly related to platform interoperability, AI-enabled systems, observability, and edge computing patterns.
• Lead the organization's AI-enabled Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) strategy, evaluating and driving adoption of AI coding assistants, agentic development tools, and AI-powered engineering workflows.
• Shape how AI technologies transform software planning, development, testing, deployment, and operational processes across engineering teams.
• Serve as a leading voice in DevEx's open source strategy, identifying opportunities for open sourcing platforms and components while supporting licensing and intellectual property considerations.
• Champion the evolution of key platforms, including Flip, toward open, AI-driven, and edge-enabled solutions.
• Actively contribute to and foster engagement with relevant open source communities while establishing best practices for open source consumption and contribution.
• Influence senior engineers, principal engineers, and engineering leaders across DevEx and partner organizations to elevate technical standards and engineering excellence.
• Evaluate and recommend build-versus-buy decisions related to developer productivity platforms, secrets management, AI infrastructure, and engineering tooling.
• Lead technical due diligence for vendor and open source technology selections, including API gateways, feature flagging solutions, developer portals, and platform engineering capabilities.
Required Qualifications:
• 12+ years of software engineering experience, including significant technical leadership experience in Principal, Staff+, or Distinguished Engineer roles.
• Proven success leading technical strategy and architecture within large-scale enterprise environments, preferably supporting organizations with 10,000+ engineers.
• Deep hands-on expertise with internal developer platforms, Kubernetes-based infrastructure, cloud-native technologies, and CI/CD ecosystems.
• Strong experience with AI-assisted software development, including coding assistants, agentic development frameworks, and AI-enabled SDLC practices.
• Demonstrated track record of influencing technical strategy and architectural decisions across organizational boundaries without direct reporting authority.
• Active participation and credibility within open source communities through contribution, maintenance, or leadership of open source projects.
• Exceptional stakeholder management, executive communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• Experience evaluating and implementing modern developer tooling, platform engineering solutions, and software delivery technologies.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with API gateway technologies such as Apigee, Kong, Azure API Management (APIM), or similar enterprise API platforms.
• Background working with feature flagging platforms, developer portals, software supply chain security, or platform engineering products.
• Experience operating in highly regulated industries such as healthcare, financial services, or other compliance-driven environments.
• Demonstrated success leading enterprise-wide AI transformation initiatives and scaling AI-enabled engineering practices across large organizations.
• Experience developing, governing, or accelerating enterprise open source strategies and community engagement programs.
• Strong understanding of observability, edge computing architectures, and modern developer experience best practices.
Education:
• Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, information systems, or a related quantitative discipline, or equivalent work experience.
• Master degree preferred.
Pay Range
The typical pay range for this role is:
$175,100.00 - $334,750.00
This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above. This position also includes an award target in the company’s equity award program.
